Hackers are using the worldwide interest in ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence-powered application, to try to hack into devices. Facebook owner Meta revealed this in a Wednesday security report, and compared the phenomenon with the recent surge in cryptocurrency scams.

Meta's team of security experts said that it had found malware that was designed to allow hackers to access people's devices. The software, which claimed to be ChatGPT-based and available via online apps stores and browser extensions, contained malware.

Guy Rosen, Meta’s Chief Information Security Officer, told reporters that ChatGPT was the new crypto. This means scammers are quickly exploiting interest in this technology.

The company reported that in just March, it blocked more than 1,000 malicious websites that purported to be connected to ChatGPT and related tools.

Some of these tools contain both working ChatGPT functionality and malicious code that can infect the users' devices.

Meta stated that it had 'investigated malware strains exploiting people's interest for OpenAI's ChatGPT in order to trick them into downloading malware pretending to offer AI functionality'.

It said that 'our research and that by security researchers have shown that malware operators try to latch on to hot-button topics and popular issues to grab people's attention'. The latest malware campaigns are attempting to lure people into downloading malicious software or clicking on malicious links.
