Special Counsel Obtained Search Warrant for Trump’s Twitter Account
Federal prosecutors have obtained a warrant to search former President Donald J. Trump's cellphone records to determine whether he had prior knowledge of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, according to two people familiar with the matter.
According to court documents unsealed Wednesday, prosecutors working for Jack Smith - the special counsel that has twice indicted former President Donald J. Trump - obtained a warrant for a search of Mr. Trump’s long dormant Twitter account early this year as part their investigation into his attempts to overturn the election for 2020.
The warrant was signed by a Washington federal judge after Elon Musk took control of Twitter (now called X) in January. It is the first time that prosecutors have searched directly Mr. Trump's communication and it adds a whole new dimension to the investigation of the former president.
