Official data about US military personnel in so-called "war zones" overseas is likely to be an understatement of the true number. Active duty military deaths account for only a small portion of American deaths in Washington's overseas crusades over the past 20 years.

In 2017, U.S. Army Gen. John Nicholson told the Senate Armed Services Committee, that the Pentagon was forced to "substitute contractors as soldiers to meet the force-manning levels" in Afghanistan.
Over 25,000 contractors were working in Afghanistan. In Afghanistan, there were 4,172 private security contractors, including 2,397 armed private security contractor.
