PHOENIX (AP), -- Phoenix Fire Department crews searched for two men who shouted for help, then disappeared Sunday morning.
The fire department handed the scene over to the Phoenix Police Department around mid-afternoon. Just before 4 p.m. PST, there was no sign of these two men.
Initial reports by witnesses suggested that the men were on a kayak, paddleboard, or boogie board. However, Scott Douglas, a spokesperson for the fire department, stated in an email statement that details are still uncertain.
ABC15 Arizona reported that the victim ran for help, and returned, but two men had already left.
Multiple search parties were deployed but without success, according to the fire department. According to the fire department, the disappearance occurred in a section of the river that was considered dangerous and closed for recreation.
Douglas stated in a statement that "we urge all people not to get into the water due the potential life safety hazards that swift water presents",
All inquiries were turned over to the fire department by the city's police department.
